Violence against women in the GDR
The documentary "Trauma 'Tripperburg' - Violence against women in the GDR" sheds light on a dark, largely unknown chapter of GDR history between 1961 and 1989. Thousands of women and girls from the age of 12 were locked up in closed venereological wards, in so-called "Tripperburgen", where they were subjected to daily gynecological examinations and abuse against their will. However, most of the women were healthy.
This chapter was kept quiet for decades. The women affected were too afraid and ashamed to talk about their trauma. Together with historian Dr. Steffi Brüning and civil rights activist Heidi Bohley, the film uncovers the background to a crime that is still taboo today. The documentary tells the story of how sexualized violence was used as an educational measure in a country that propagated emancipation and gender equality by the state.
