July 22 – The Munich Shooting

On July 22, 2016, David Sonboly, a German-Iranian gunman, opened fire on immigrants, leaving nine dead and five wounded, some seriously. Sonboly avoided arrest by suicide. Social media was quickly flooded with rumors and fake news, and the fear of terrorist attacks took over the entire city in the summer of 2016. 

The show’s four episodes show the circumstances of the crime and investigate how the 18-year-old was able to obtain a weapon from the dark web, how fake news and panic fed on each other that tragic night, and how the victim’s families are coping today. THE MUNICH SHOOTING portrays the event as a right-wing attack. It focuses on the actions of a single perpetrator who had international role models as well as imitators and asks the all-important question: What needs to be done to prevent such crimes in the future?

Award: Eisvogel Preis 2023

Together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the State Minister for Culture and the Media, animal filmmaker Heinz Sielmann’s Foundation has launched the “Eisvogel-Preis” (translates to “Kingfisher-Prize”). The award, which is permanently donated by the institution itself, puts the spotlight on innovative TV and cinema productions that save energy and resources during the planning and implementation, and merely rely on new sustainable production practices.
